Home Improvement Tips Made Easy | Home Remodeling How To

Gutters, downspouts and chimneys sometimes get overlooked during yearly maintenance and home improvements. It is important to inspect these aspects of your home to make sure they are functioning properly, and to make any necessary repairs. Your chimney can catch fire if not cleaned on a regular basis and gutters and downspouts can become clogged with debris, which can lead to water damage if not addressed.

If your house has an air system or a central heating system that is over 7 years old, you might want to upgrade and get a new one. This home improvement can greatly reduce your heating and cooling costs. Newer models are also much quieter than the older ones.

If a contractor offers you a cash discount, you need to choose a different one. Paying with cash won?t give you the records you?ll need to produce should anything go wrong.

Use light colors to create a soothing atmosphere: purple, green or blue often work well. Linens and cotton fabric add to a peaceful atmosphere. Put some potpourri atop the coffee table and have scented candles in order to create a tranquil heaven for yourself.

A brand new welcome mat and a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the front of your house. The entrance to your home makes a significant statement to guests. Small little touches, like that new welcome mat or a vibrant potted plant at your entrance, creates the positive impression you want your visitors to have.

Spruce up your bathroom in a flash, without spending a small fortune. Get new towels, a shower curtain and a new rug. You will change the look of the room right away. Plants can brighten a bathroom but you should choose plants that will thrive in the humidity and lack of sunlight.

Install weather stripping on the doors and windows to make your house more energy efficient. This is a cheap fix but can save you lots of money on heating and cooling costs for your home. It can even reduce those drafts that always seem to appear on chilly nights.

Consider your porch if you want to improve you home?s value. Visitors? eyes are immediately drawn to this area. User a power washer to give it a good cleaning. Paint it an interesting color, add a couple of inviting chairs and lush plants. You home?s value could actually increase more than the cost you put into your home improvement. With simple changes, you can make big impacts.

Measure your windows properly before purchasing and hanging blinds. Unlike other window coverings that can be adjusted to fit a window, to be effective blinds must accommodate the specific measurements of a window. Blinds can be installed inside your window frame as well as outside your window frame.

If you hire a contractor, ensure you keep good records. Do not rely on the contractor to handle this for you. Hold onto any contracts, invoices, receipts and other paperwork related to your home improvement project. If you do this, you can focus on the project rather than fighting over procedural details.

If you are planning something major in terms of a home renovation project, make sure you hire a professional to help with the plans. Unless you are a professional, your plans may not contain the correct function. A professional designer can create meaningful plans that also meet safety restrictions and requirements.

Take the information gleaned from the above article and apply it to your future home improvement projects. Your home is one of your greatest assets and can serve you and your family for generations to come if you take care to improve it and upkeep it wisely.

The Blue Planet? Martian crater is blue, not red

Detail of an Old Master oil painting, a close-up of a copper-rich mineral, or the vivid colours of a paua shell? The image is in fact the surface of an alien world: an enhanced-colour image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera.

Each colour represents a different type of rock, the mix of minerals churned up by a meteor striking the surface close to the Nili Fossae region. Known as ejecta, these rocks surround an impact crater and give scientists a chance to examine the planet's ancient bedrock.

Sometimes ejecta does not fall back to the surface like these minerals and instead is cast into space, creating meteorites of Martian surface material. One such rock from Mars is the ALH 84001 meteorite, which crashed on Earth and contains formations that famously look like fossilised microbes.

Justice Dept. sues Arizona, Utah polygamous towns

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Authorities in a pair of polygamous Utah-Arizona border towns have supported a campaign of intimidation against the unfaithful, denying them housing and municipal services and allowing members of the dominant religious sect to destroy their crops and property, the U.S. Justice Department said in a lawsuit Thursday.

The federal civil rights case was filed against the towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz., where most residents are members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, run by the group's jailed leader Warren Jeffs.

Jeffs is serving a life sentence in Texas after convictions on child sex and bigamy charges, but is said to still maintain control of the communities from behind bars.

According to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Arizona, city leaders and law enforcement in the two towns have for decades served at Jeffs' pleasure while ignoring the constitutional rights of residents who aren't FLDS followers.

"The cities' governments, including the Marshal's Office, have been deployed to carry out the will and dictates of FLDS leaders, particularly Warren Jeffs and the officials to whom he delegates authority," the lawsuit states. "The Marshal's Office has inappropriately used its state-granted law enforcement authority to enforce the edicts of the FLDS, to the detriment of non-FLDS members."

In one case of law enforcement misconduct, according to the suit, officers rounded up all dogs and shot them in a "slaughter pit" outside town on specific orders from Jeffs.

The suit also says officers regularly allow sect members to victimize non-members by destroying their crops, vandalizing property and trespassing.

Federal officials also say officers have made traffic stops and arrests without cause, kept underage brides from running away and prevented children of non-FLDS members from using a public playground.

The lawsuit accuses city departments of refusing to provide electricity or water service to non-members.

"There's nothing to support the allegation that non-FLDS members are treated differently," attorney Blake Hamilton told The Associated on Thursday. Hamilton represents Hildale and the Marshal's Office that serves both towns.

Hamilton said the towns ran out of water for new users, but the federal lawsuit insists "there is no water shortage."

He said Justice Department lawyers threatened a lawsuit in December when they met with him and another attorney representing Colorado City.

"DOJ asked us to dismantle a community," Hamilton said.

Jeffs is imprisoned in Texas after being found guilty last year of sexually assaulting two of his two dozen underage brides.

His conviction came after an April 2008 raid of the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch in Texas, which Jeffs had ordered his followers to build.

The raid led to a chaotic roundup of 400 children living at the secretive location in what became one of the largest custody cases in U.S. history. All of the children were eventually returned but 11 men ? including Jeffs and other high-ranking FLDS lieutenants ? were arrested on charges of sexual assault or bigamy and later convicted.

The federal lawsuit accuses the towns of violating the federal Fair Housing Act by depriving non-sect members of their constitutional rights. It seeks unspecified damages for victims, penalties levied against the towns, and court orders prohibiting officials from harassing residents who were never FLDS members, left the sect on their own or were excommunicated.

It says the defendants "have acted in concert with FLDS leadership to deny non-FLDS individuals housing, police protection, and access to public space and services."

Jeff Matura, a lawyer for Colorado City, denied the allegations.

"We'll have our day in court," Matura said Thursday, adding that town utilities don't discriminate against anyone. "There's not a question on the application that says, 'What's your religion?'"

The federal complaint will finally bring the rule of law to the towns, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said.

"We have made substantial progress during the past decade in bringing justice and security to the people living in the twin cities of Hildale and Colorado City," Shurtleff said, adding that his office has sought federal involvement for years.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne also lauded the action.

"Finding a solution to the illegal activities that have been occurring in Colorado City for decades has been one of my highest priorities," Horne said. "I remain committed to stopping the illegal conduct perpetrated by the FLDS church on non-church members."

The Justice Department's lawsuit is similar to one pending in federal court in Arizona that alleges some of the same violations of the Fair Housing Act by the defendants. The complaint was filed by a former FLDS member and his wife, and the Arizona Attorney General's Office.

The DOJ suit also comes after Legislatures in Utah and Arizona failed this year to pass bills aimed at abolishing the towns' Marshal's Office.

The FLDS practices polygamy, a legacy of early Mormon church teachings that held plural marriage brought exaltation in heaven.

However, the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abandoned the practice in 1890 as a condition of Utah's statehood and ex-communicates members who still engage in polygamy.

Pink Announces Cheeky New Single

Singer will drop 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' on July 9.
By Jocelyn Vena

Pink
Photo:

Pink likes to have fun when it comes to her music, and her brand-new single's title once again shows her love for all things cheeky.

The singer used a video message to announce her forthcoming new track, "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)." "Hi, world! I've got an announcement to make. My new single, off my new record, off my new life, is called 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' and it's very exciting," she said in the short clip. "And I wrote it with Greg Kurstin, who is amazing. And we had an incredible time. [My daughter] Willow played bells and bass on a couple of other songs, but I think you're really gonna like it 'cause I really like it and I like it enough for all of us. See you soon!"

Kurstin has recently worked with the Wanted, Kelly Clarkson and Foster the People. Billboard.com reports that the song will hit the streets on July 9, with Pink's next studio album dropping later in the year. It marks her first full-length studio release since 2008's Funhouse, which launched such hits as "So What," "Sober" and "Please Don't Leave Me." She followed up that release with a greatest-hits compilation in late 2010, the aptly titled Greatest Hits ... So Far!!! In fact, the album helped the singer get some more greatest hits thanks to the success of its two singles, "Raise Your Glass" and "F---in' Perfect."

In addition to announcing her single plans, Pink also tweeted a candid shot of herself (with baby Willow) in between shots from her photo shoot for the album, teasing her new music's impending release.

Shades of Brown ? Black, Latino and US Latino Cinema panels at ...

I took in a few panels over the weekend down here at LA Film Fest that I really appreciated for sparking some provocative dialogue I am eager to continue throughout the Festival. I found it especially interesting how different the US Latino and Black film communities are responding to their storytelling plight in talking about their respective representation in media. Meanwhile the lively Latino panel, which was perhaps the broadest in scope, was eloquent and skillfully led by LA Times? Reed Johnson who brought a high level of articulation in his profesh moderating.? As panel junkies know, a good moderator is key to an engaging panel and essential to keep it on point.? Here are my takeaways on the three panels:

Elvis Mitchell, Shari Frilot, Ava DuVernay, Roya Rastegar and Bradford Young

Moderated by Film Independent?s LACMA film curator and go-to festival moderator, Elvis Mitchell, I was particularly impressed at the messaging clarity and solidarity of the black film community?s efforts and goals for equal representation.? The panelists were very tuned-in with monitoring their talent behind and in front of the camera, and in this case stressing the importance of? festival curators, which was identified as one of three instrumental factors to enable their films getting out there.

Shari Frilot, Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival:? There was much (due) love and props given to Frilot for her ardent and tireless championing of films of color at Sundance.? She pointed out how after Lee Daniel?s breakout hit, Precious which premiered at 2009 Sundance and went on to win a couple Academy Awards, the next couple years it was the black films that were the first to be sold off the mountain including the dazzling lesbian coming of age film, Pariah.? She questioned why this achievement was not picked up or lauded in the mainstream media.? Its indeed curious and perhaps a telling point on the cultural gatekeeper front ? (shortage of black critics and journalists?)? Having witnessed Shari?s highly charged and articulate arguing for gloriously imperfect, fresh and raw films I respect how she truly changes the way the film programming conversation takes place by discussing films? drive, potential and power. I aspire to ?bring it? like she does in my own programming career.? Acknowledging the personal efforts she puts in to make the festival seem accessible to filmmakers of color who may not bother putting Sundance on their radar, the idea of doing a black college tour came up.

Ava DuVernay, filmmaker (Middle of Nowhere) and founder of AFFRM:? DuVernay?s emotion for the topic at hand along with her experience from her publicist days and current roles as filmmaker and distributor made her a stirring contributor to the conversation.?? Ava thanked LA Film Festival Director Stephanie Allain for programming Middle of Nowhere as a gala screening which elevates her film with a high profile slot within the festival.? A packed house at Wednesday?s gala screening will be quite significant to the black filmmaking community given the massive 800 seat theater and checking the LA Film Fest website it?s at Rush which will make for an exciting milestone!? The winner of the Best Director Award at Sundance Film Festival shared her personal observations like being stunned to see empty seats at the black film screenings at Sundance which is unheard of in the notoriously hard-to-get tickets Festival.? She mentioned that while she is frequently featured on Shadow and Act, the African Diaspora blog on the Indiewire network, she has never been on Indiewire?s main page.? DuVernay expressed her desire to see more films that move and operate beyond ?black bodies?.

There was mention of films touted as successful black films when they happen to be by non-black filmmakers.? I can?t help but think the room was thinking about Gimme the Loot written and directed by Adam Leon and Beasts of the Southern Wild written and directed by Benh Zeitlin.? Both films have been praised and celebrated for their poignant storytelling and vivid portrayal of their black protagonists? lifestyles ? and the filmmakers happen to be white Jewish New Yorkers.? And both films were quickly picked up for distribution at their respective festival premieres. I have to admit that if we are talking about presenting positive representation in films my belief is that individually, these two films offer a lot as far as image conversion for eschewing mis-representation by avoiding stereotypes about black folks.? There?s nobody smoking crack or perpetuating violent crime in Gimme the Loot, and in Beasts the poetic punch of self-sufficient little Hushpuppy in the die-hard persevering displaced fictional community? that alludes to the forgotten 9th Ward post-Katrina, shows a triumph of spirit against the government and society?s response efforts following the devastating natural catastrophe in the dominantly affected marginalized population.

Bradford Young, cinematographer (Middle of Nowhere, Pariah, Restless City): A Howard University alumus, the in-demand cinematographer more gently echoed Ava?s sentiment about the limited accessibility and representation of black filmmakers but I feel he gave a bit more benefit of the doubt to black films by non-black filmmakers by his eloquent word of choice to weigh the debate; ?Intention?.? The way he talks about his own cinematic approach is greatly influenced by the intention of the story and point of view.? A NY Times article recently featured the cinematographer and made note of his full frame and close up shots in Middle of Nowhere.? Indeed the luscious and texture he brings to shooting skincolor sticks out in my mind having seen it at Sundance.? Bradford is one cool cat with lots of soul.? All panelists agreed and were especially thankful for his eyes.

Roya Rastegar, Ph.D, Festival Programmer:? Inventive cinematography, curation by more females and people of color and innovative distribution were three ways Rastegar outlined to help minority filmmakers distinguish their work and get seen by the public.??? I would love to get my hands on her dissertation, History of Concsiousness (here?s a taste) in which she investigates the role of festivals in shaping marginalized culture.? Armed with such interesting facts on the history of film festivals, (did you know Stalin created the first film festival?) Rastegar added a lot of context to the origins and current state of film festivals.? She also shared the behind the scenes conversations of film programmers when talking about films of color and the rueful tendency to dismiss these films because they aren?t so called ?good enough?. ? She made no hesitation in pointing out that Tribeca Film Festival did not have one single black film in competition this year.

US Latino Cinema: Welcome to the Bi-Literate Future -? Presented by San Antonio Film Commission and AFCI (Association of Film Commissions International)

Luis Reyes, Moi, Doug Spain, Gabriela Tagliavini, Ralph Lopez

I had the privilege of participating on this panel which was prefaced by a Univision spot highlighting their new campaign efforts of reaching a bi-lingual audience.? In it, an old woman recalls being prevented from speaking her language as a child in school and then we cut to today?s young US Latino man who flips from Spanish to English talking about his liking alternative band, The Strokes as much as Spanish-language pop rock band, Juanes.

What it was about:? Our Latino population in the US is now more than ever embracing a bi-lingual, or more importantly, a bi-literate culture.? Will films reflect the changing demographic of the US as a bi-literate (a Spanish and English language culture) be commercially successful and be able to find an audience?? And perhaps more importantly, will the studio system be able to adapt to the successful strategies many in the independent world are using to create commercially viable content?

Douglas Spain (Star Maps, Walkout, Band of Brothers) is used to wearing multiple hats and so acted as both panelist and moderator.? Spain offered up his experience as an actor/producer/director as a gay latino filmmaker who has successfully worked in independent film and studio and television mediums.? His quest for staying true to himself with the roles and films he is making rang resonant to all.

Ralph Lopez, San Antonio filmmaker: The producer of Wolf which premiered at this year?s SXSW talked about his? aim is to create and tell stories that transcend color.? Like his provocative film about the complexities faced by the victim of a bishop?s inappropriate behavior, his collaborations with director black filmmaker Ya Ke Smith comes first and foremost from a place of telling moving stories.

Gabriela Tagliavini, filmmaker (Ladies Night, Without Men, The Mule: Having had big success with Spanish language film Ladies Night in 2006, Gabriela switched languages and directed Eva Longoria in the English language film, Without Men which sold to many international territories given Longoria?s international brand name.? With her upcoming film, The Mule she is looking to take advantage of the crime action genre and star Sharon Stone to offer real commentary on immigration and the dangerous toll of the US Mexico border.

Luis Reyes, historian and author of? the comprehensive book, Hispanics in Hollywood: The old school gent on our panel made some slightly more conventional suggestions on how to make a successful bi-literate film like ?know your audience? and attaching a well known actor to your film so you can market it.

I added my two cents and in retrospect I think my thoughts coincided with Rastegar?s in the proactive vein of here?s what we can-do positive approach of encouraging budding filmmakers to utilize genre (horror and gay US Latino films stand out from the stack and are sought after by festival programs).? I also asked my fellow panelists if they found the US Latino filmmaking community as fragmented as I see it.? Unlike Black or LGBT film organizations I feel the US Latino community has much more work in becoming inclusive within our distinct bi-lingual backgrounds in order to successfully empower and advocate for our films. Organizations like NALIP and LALIFF were mentioned in answer.? But in my opinion and with all respect, I find NALIP a bit cliquesh and lacking a younger pulse and generation of organizers, and LALIFF is too inconsistent to make fundamental cultural change.? Although we touched on the question of the challenges our community faces working in Spanish versus English I?m not sure we fully stayed on point in attempting to answer the ambitious subject and interesting talking points raised.? But the audience seemed more the type of wanting basic advice on how to break into filmmaking so most questions and conversations was directed to the filmmakers on the panels and in that regard it was a successful exchange.

Caf? Latino presented by HBO and supported by University of Guadalajara Foundation

credit: Juan Tallo

Made evident by the participating film clips that were shown before the panel there is much genre and story diversity in the Latino films at LA Film Fest this year.? I?m especially happy the Festival recognizes the growing influence of the Mexican documentary by having selected Reportero by Bernardo Ruiz, Canicula by Jose Alvarez and Drought by Everardo Gonzalez.? The panel was ostensibly about the Festival?s Latin American filmmakers and how they explore their roles as storytellers in an increasingly global world.? With such a high number of panelists and so many interesting topics broached however, it left one wanting more time to engage with the personable talents onstage.

Alejandro Brugues, director of Juan of the Dead (credit: Juan Tallo)

Reed Johnson encouraged the panelists to chime in at will which Alejandro Brugues, director of Cuban Zombie film, Juan of the Dead took full advantage of to defend big hollywood films like The Avengers, which Gonzalez? initially brought up if only to point out the David and Goliath challenge filmmakers in Mexico face having to compete for screens against these big money backed blockbusters.? Brugues set himself apart from the group by defending his love for the blockbuster which inspired him to direct films. Unlike his peers? ?artful? films he considers his film strictly for public entertainment (he joked that his film is actually a documentary).? Yet at the same time he admits he took advantage of the Zombie genre a la Romero to infuse it with his personal observations of contemporary Cuban society ? which he would not have been able to shoot in Cuba otherwise.

Reed Johnson, Everardo Gonzalez, Dominga Sotomayor, Arturo Pons, Alejandro Brugues, Jose Alvarez, Bernardo Ruiz
(credit: Juan Tallo)

Real threat to Alaska Native culture isn't oil development. It's a world without oil.

OPINION: When it comes to oil in the north, the time has arrived for environmentalists and Alaska Natives themselves to face the fact the gasoline that fuels the internal combustion engine long ago corrupted traditional cultural practices.

That the descendants of the 49th state's aboriginal occupants have managed to hang onto and celebrate the vestiges of these traditions is a testament to Native leaders, but the sort of claim that follows here is pure nonsense: "On Alaska's Arctic coast, the Inupiat people practice the same cultural traditions that they have for thousands of years -- traditions that fuel their bodies, their spirits and their future."

Those are the words of Betsy Beardsley, director of the Environmental Justice Program at the Alaska Wilderness League, writing for Forbes magazine in an article entitled "The Case Against Drilling in Alaska's Arctic Waters."

There is a case to be made against drilling in Alaska's waters. This is not it. The "cultural traditions" of the Arctic coast today are as vested in modern petrochemicals as the traditions of any other American.?

Oil, simply put, powers the Inupiat. It's the lifeblood of vital food-gathering equipment: outboards motors, snowmachines and four-wheelers. Oil powers up the rotors on the North Slope Borough search-and-rescue helicopters that have saved many a lost hunter. Oil fuels the jets that deliver North Slope and Northwest residents to Alaska's capital in Juneau or the nation's capital in Washington, D.C., to lobby for coastal protection, marine mammal management, and environmental safeguards on drilling in the Arctic where, if the world was perfect, there would indeed be no drilling.

Perhaps if the world were perfect, there would be no more drilling for oil anywhere.

Oil is a nonrenewable resource. Humans have become addicted to it, and Americans are the worst addicts. Americans consume roughly 25 percent of the world's oil. Large parts of the rest of the modern world also guzzles oil as if there were no end while the third world struggles to be like us. The latter is only increasing demand on a limited resource.

Did crude save Alaska Native's hunter-gatherer tradition?

We are going to move on to some other source of energy at some time. This is inevitable. The oil that flows from beneath the Arctic is destined to run out, or fall to some new and better technology, just like the oil that flowed from the whales of the Arctic. In the 1800s, whale oil was a commodity even more valuable than crude is today.

"At the height of the industry in 1856, sperm oil sold for $1.77 a gallon, and the United State was producing 4 to 5 million gallons of spermaceti and 6 to 10 million gallons of train oil annually," writes Michael Clark, a California petroleum geologist who has put together a history of the whaling industry and oil that makes a pretty strong case that oil saved the whales.

One can only guess what would have become of the Inupiat if a crude-based petrochemical business had never materialized, if a world economy in need of whale oil had gone on killing whales until there were none left to kill.

The Inupiat clung to their cultural traditions by hunting whales. It is a wonderful thing. It is their touchstone to the past. All peoples should be so lucky on a planet where most of us live lives more and more detached from the hunter-gatherers from which we sprang. The wilderness is our habitat every bit as much as the modern city. All of us have our roots in the wild. We should cherish them.

But let's not deceive ourselves or anyone else. Society as we know it at this moment needs oil. This is even more evident in remote, rural Alaska. What is left of cultural traditions everywhere are now fueled by oil. Oil in the outboard motors that drive the skin boats used to hunt the whales. Oil in the forklift that hoists the whale ashore. Oil in the four-wheel, all-terrain vehicles that bring villagers to the beach.

Some might wish it were otherwise. Alaska Native cultures were shaped by hard work and hardship. Oil has in some ways turned the culture soft. The culture today is not the culture of Sidney Huntington or the late Herbie Nayokpuk or the long-gone Howard Albert, a man who could walk for days in front of a dog team on snowshoes and do damn near anything with his hands and simple tools. He took his own life in 1983. In some ways, it might be said, he just couldn't adjust to the world in which we live today.

Oil fuels modern Alaska life -- even in Arctic

It is a world of oil and technology, and not just in the cities. Oil, I am sad to say as one who has worked to reduce the size of his carbon footprint, has made Alaska a better place.

There were, within the lifetimes of many of us, people in this state still cutting wood by hand to fuel the stove that provided their only warmth against the cold, Arctic night. It was in a pot upon that stove they melted ice to provide water for drinking and bathing. It was in cold cabins they rose every morning to light that stove, shivering as they did, to face another day. ?

High prices have forced some Alaskans back to burning wood, but no one cuts it with a handsaw anymore. That is too much work. The gas-powered chainsaw is no longer a luxury. So too the gas-powered snowmachine to haul the wood home.

I have lived a little of the life of hauling wood and water. You have no idea how hard it is until you have done it. The luxuries of modern America -- centralized heating, running water, plumbing -- are so taken for granted by the people who stand for tens of minutes soaking up the simple pleasure of life beneath a hot shower. Few today have been forced to bathe from a bowl of water derived from ice melted on the stove. Few have made the run from cabin to outhouse at minus-50, or turned to the stinking honey bucket inside.?

You probably think the flu is something when it debilitates you so you can't go to work. Imagine what it's like when work is required not for income but for survival. Try forcing yourself out of bed sick to light that wood stove, because you have no choice but to light the stove or freeze to death. Try dragging yourself outside at 50 degrees below zero to get more firewood to feed the stove because that too is a necessity. These sorts of experiences will change your view on oil.

Oil fuels technological magic. There is no other description. Imagine the reaction of someone from 200 years ago if they came alive today to see the wizardry of this fuel in even its crudest uses.

A 55-gallon drum of oil propped up outside a tiny cabin feeds a stove for weeks without ever needing to refuel it. A 5-gallon can of gas poured into a snowmachine allows you to visit friends or relatives who live two-day walk away. One can argue that Alaska Natives would be better off today if they still occasionally made the walk. Their culture was defined by this sort of toughness. But one cannot argue against the idea that their lives have been enriched by the opportunities to socialize without such hardship.?

One might even argue that traveling and socializing, fueled by oil, saved what remains of Alaska Native culture. Native leaders didn't fight to win passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act from isolated, far-flung villages 40 years ago. They got together to organize to do that, and then they flew to Washington, D.C., to lobby their cause. Oil made it all possible.

Hell, oil drove the show. The claims settlement, which awarded 44 million acres of land and nearly $1 billion to 12 Alaska Native regional corporations and more than 200 village corporations, was driven by the desire to settle land disputes in order to pave the way for construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. You could say that Native corporations, many of which are doing quite well today, were born of oil. Some, of course, complain those corporations aren't doing enough for "their people."

Tell that to the thousands of Alaska Natives who have found gainful employment working for the corporations.

Yes, they are imperfect. Everything is. The greatest failing of the corporations might be in something no one even talks about in this state: the brain drain from rural Alaska. But with that said, the corporations have helped a lot of smart kids make a life in the modern world, the world in which we all live. The world in which Beardsley and the Alaska Wilderness League lives.

Real threat to Alaska Native culture? Running out of oil.

It's easy for someone in that world to play on the emotions of people living out there in the vast beyond who fear change -- because we all fear change. We all desire the security and comfort of the known. Paradoxically, we all want a better life; we just don't want anything to change in the process.

That there are those in Arctic Alaska who don't want their lives disturbed by the disturbance of oil development is understandable. But what if the choice is that or no fuel for their homes, their four-wheelers, their snowmachines?

This is tribal desire up against national need, and we are all tribal. All of us -- white, black, Asian, Native and other. Our NIMBYism is tribalism in its simplest form. We don't want anybody messing with our neighborhood, and the hell with the big picture. But there is always a big picture, and in the big picture today, Alaskans need oil. Americans need oil. The world economy needs oil. The infrastructure on which we all depend today is powered by oil.

It's nice to fantasize about life without it, but it's hard to imagine what life in the Arctic would be if it were there no more. Damn few people out there are these days physically or emotionally equipped to survive without oil. It's about time everyone in Alaska faced this.

The real threat to Alaska Native cultures as they exist today is not oil development, but running out of oil. The Arctic has changed. The dog teams of old are nearly all gone. So are the people who could travel for days on snowshoes or foot. Society depends on the snowmachine, the four-wheeler, and the outboard-powered boat. They all run on gas. There are no electric or solar-powered options. And until there are -- or until motors that run on something other than gas become economic -- the Inupiat will remain every bit as dependent on oil as the rest of us; in many ways more so.

As an urban Alaskan, I have access to a lot of roads and trails on which I can ride my bicycle, which I do a lot. Have you ever tried riding a bike across the tundra? Even on the fattest of tires, it doesn't work. And in the winter, unless the snow conditions are just right, you need the old, packed track of a snowmachine on which to pedal. And the track of the snowmachine again depends on oil.?

Oil is something none of us can escape, at least for now.

Eighteen killed as Turkish troops clash with PKK

Eighteen people were killed on Tuesday in fighting between Turkish soldiers and Kurdish militants at three military outposts in southeast Turkey, officials and security sources said, in the deadliest clashes in recent months.

Eight Turkish soldiers were killed and 16 others wounded in simultaneous attacks by the militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) on the outposts, the sources said.

In subsequent clashes Turkish troops killed 10 PKK militants, according to the governor?s office in Hakkari province where the fighting occurred, near the mountainous border with Iraq.

The attack came at a time of new efforts in Turkey to address the grievances of the Kurdish minority in a bid to end a conflict that has scarred the region for three decades.

The guerrillas began the co-ordinated attacks with rocket launchers and rifles at around 5 a.m. local time on the military observation points, the sources said, adding that operations were continuing against the rebels.

The militants were believed to have crossed the border from northern Iraq to carry out the attacks before retreating back across the border, the sources said.

Several thousand PKK militants are based in mountain hideouts in northern Iraq, from where they regularly launch attacks on state targets in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey.

The head of the armed forces General Necdet Ozel rushed to the region, along with the commanders of the ground forces and paramilitary gendarmarie, Turkish media reported.

The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, launched its separatist insurgency in 1984. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

As Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan seeks an end to the conflict, the leader of Turkey?s opposition Republican People?s Party said this month he was willing to work with the ruling AK Party to resolve the Kurdish problem.

Mr. Erdogan subsequently told parliament that Kurdish language lessons could be offered as an optional course in schools. He also suggested he was prepared to hold talks with prominent Kurdish politician Leyla Zana after she said she believed Mr. Erdogan was capable of ending the Kurdish troubles.

Amid speculation about further moves to end the conflict, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc raised the possibility at the weekend of jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan being put under house arrest if the militants were to lay down their weapons.

However other leading government figures, pointing to nationalist sensitivities over such a radical move, dismissed the idea, and Mr. Erdogan said it was only Mr. Arinc?s personal view.

Concerns about the PKK insurgency have been exacerbated by the conflict in Syria, which also has a Kurdish minority.

PKK rebels have launched sporadic attacks in recent months near the Syrian border in Hatay province, where thousands of Syrians are housed in refugee camps. One Turkish soldier was killed on Monday night in Hatay in a clash with PKK militants, the governor?s office there said in a statement.

Monday?s attack in Hakkari drew parallels with an assault on a military outpost in the same region of Daglica in 2007, when 12 soldiers were killed and 8 were kidnapped by the PKK.

ZTE announces Grand X LTE for Europe and Asia Pacific

You probably don't put too much thought into how many chips it takes to get your smartphone on an LTE network, but just in case you were curious, ZTE's upcoming Grand X LTE (T82) will only need one. Qualcomm's MSM8960 makes the Grand X LTE ZTE's first single-chip LTE handset, and the firm is very proud. If processor cores and hardware stats are more your concern, however, rest easy knowing the Grand X packs a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a delectable serving of Android 4.0. Details on the slab's price and release date are scarce, but it should hit Europe and Asia Pacific in the third quarter. Check out the official press release after the break for more details.

What To Consider: Although the site encourages collaboration and feedback on the open forum, posts require a detailed campaign with no holes or gaps, as well as a video pitch.

Ideal User: Small businesses and entrepreneurs looking to jump-start their startup by gaining the support and feedback of like-minded individuals will benefit greatly from this open-forum platform.

Cost: There is no cost for standard services.

2. Razoo

Summary: Razoo has helped nearly one million officially registered nonprofit organizations to crowdfund. The site allows nonprofits to accept donations on their own website or on their Facebook page. Fundraising causes are organized into categories like animals, arts, cancer, disaster relief, environmental, and more. Charities can also post their fundraising events, including memorials and walkathons.

Best Feature: Razoo allows charities to create a profile for their cause, complete with video and photos. The site offers detailed examples of fundraising ideas for nonprofits to get started, and hosts "giving days," which are 24-hour online fundraising competitions. The site also offers an iPhone app and donation widget for the organization?s website or Facebook page, which makes receiving and tracking donations a breeze. Tech-savvy individuals will like Razoo's iPhone app, which allows users to receive notifications when someone donates, and includes an option to thank each donor individually.

What To Consider: You must be an officially recognized nonprofit to use this service. Razoo includes a list of approved charities, but if yours isn?t on the list, you can email your letter of determination from the IRS directly to Razoo so they can include it. You can learn more about this here.

Ideal User: Razoo is a good choice for nonprofits looking for an easy way to manage and encourage donations via web and social media.

Cost: The site charges a flat rate of 2.9% on all donations to cover credit card processing costs. Users can set up a fundraiser for any charity with no setup fees or monthly subscription fees.

3. Pozible

Summary: Pozible is a crowdfunding platform for creative-minded individuals looking to raise funds, realize their aspirations, and make great ideas become a reality. Project creators are able to present their visions to a worldwide audience, as the platform recently went global.

Best Feature: Unlike some of the other crowdfunding platforms, Pozible offers a variety of resources to help their users succeed. The Pozible Handbook provided by the team includes guidelines for before you start, how to set up your campaign, what to do during your campaign, and where to go after your campaign. Furthermore, the site provides a helpful blog with crowdfunding tips as well as an advice section from previous crowdfunders.

What To Consider: Pozible has an ?all or nothing? approach. Each project owner is forced to set a funding goal and time limit (from 1-90 days) for their idea. If you are unsuccessful in raising your goal during the set time period, all pledges are canceled and the funds are not transferred. If you are able to estimate your projected funding, then this will not be an issue, but the race against time could deter you from your ultimate goal.

Ideal User: Pozible is developed for artists, musicians, filmmakers, journalists, designers, social change makers, entrepreneurs, inventors, event organizers, and software developers. The platform brings the creative-minded together.

Cost: There is a standard service fee of 5% as of June 6, 2012. Fees only apply to successful projects.

4. FundaGeek

Summary: FundaGeek is a crowdfunding platform focusing on technical innovation, such as commercial projects based on technology, scientific research projects at universities and research institutions, education, and more. The site focuses on seven to 90-day commercial technology or tech research projects.

Best Feature: When users submit a project, it undergoes a review to ensure it's creative, unique, and appealing to a variety of people. FundaGeek also allows the user to make a project private so donors have to log in to see the full project details.

What To Consider: The site can be a bit difficult to browse and could use a categorical feature for searching for projects. Also, because FundaGeek screens projects before adding them to the site, not every interested patron has the chance to use its services.

Ideal User: Individuals looking to fund research or projects in the technology and science sector will find FundaGeek to be a good option.

Cost: There is no charge to create a project on FundaGeek, but if a project is successfully funded, the site charges 5 to 9% depending on which marketing option you choose.

5. Credibles

Summary: Credibles, a service offered by Slow Money, offers crowdfunding services to small, sustainable food-related businesses. The site offers a redemption service for prepaid crowd funding, donation tracking, and more.

Best Feature: When donors prepay their favorite business, they?re repaid with edible credits, or "Credibles,? which can be redeemed at the business. These credits, worth $1, serve as an incentive for fans and customers to participate. A customer who invested in a food-related business could, for instance, be paid back for their investment in ice cream. Credibles can be given as gifts and transferred for use at partnering businesses.

What To Consider: The service is currently limited to businesses in New York City and California, so businesses in other areas will have to wait before they?re able to use the service.

Ideal User: Credibles is ideal for professionals and business owners in the food and restaurant industry.

Cost: Credibles charges a small service fee when a supporter pays via the ?pre-pay? option, though the site does not specify how much.

6. Petridish

Summary: Petridish is a crowdfunding platform for scientists to showcase their research to the public and for the public to show recognition and support to innovative researchers in the form of monetary payments or pledges.

Best Feature: Petridish provides you with the opportunity to gain support of the next, life-changing scientific discovery. Your ?backers? have the ability to email your project to family and friends, share your research on Twitter and Facebook, and even ?star? your findings as a favorite. With these simple links, your research has the ability to be shared and spread across the Internet quickly.

What To Consider: Projects are hand-selected, thus not everyone has a chance of showcasing their research. Also, similar to Pozible, Petridish uses an ?all or nothing? approach in which projects are only funded if they meet their goal by the set deadline.

Ideal User: Scientific experts looking to share their passions with others in order to accumulate backers and funding worldwide. Petridish is for the ?best of the best? in science, as only some projects will make the cut.

Cost: The site requires a 5% fee. Third-party credit card processing fees are also the responsibility of the researcher, which are typically 3 to 4%.
