Food & Drink | 'Cooking with Poo' wins top book prize

Its title may not be to everyone's tastes yet a cookery book titled 'Cooking with Poo' has scooped a top book prize.

The unusual title for the 114-page cookbook stems from the Thai author Siyuud Diwong's nickname, which admittedly sounds a little unflattering. However, Poo is actually Thai for crab, so perhaps Siyuud has an unusual form of walking sideways and odd, claw-like hands, rather than simply smelling like excrement.

Either way, the book and its bizarre title picked up Diagram prize for the oddest book title of the year, beating the likes of Estonian Sock Patterns All Around the World and 1935 Hebden Bridge: The Great Singapore Penis Panic.

"Given that this year the three most voted-for works contain the words 'poo', 'sexer' and 'penis' in the title, it appears that this year's prize will go down in history as a blue year," said the award's custodian, Horace Bent after the new winner was announced.

"But there is nothing wrong with that. Many of the world's greatest writers have dabbled in off-colour humour, so I find Cooking with Poo a fitting winner."

"Since the award of the prize, I am pleased to say that my writing career is once again flourishing. Editors are keen to publish my words," said last year's winning author, Michael Young, who won the prize for his Managing a Dental Practice the Genghis Khan Way.

"Being the winner of the Diagram prize has, I feel, given both the book and me a great deal of credibility, which perhaps without the epithet 'prize-winning' we would never have achieved." We're sure Poo's publishers won't be kicking up a stink once they hear of the imminent impact the win will have on their book.
