If you've got a malware infestation that interferes with installing regular antivirus protection, or ransomware that keeps you from booting Windows at all, it may be time to call in a hit man. HitmanPro 3.7 is specifically designed to clear out this kind of resistant malware, and its new Kickstart module foils malware that holds your computer for ransom.

Vendors frequently offer cleanup-only tools like HitmanPro for free. You don't have to pay to run a scan with HitmanPro, but if you want to remove malware found by the scan you'll have to pay for it ($19.95 per year for one license, $29.95 for three) or register for a 30-day free trial. On the plus side, you don't have to start that 30-day trial if the scan came up clean.

Easy Launch, Easy Scan
By default, the tiny HitmanPro executable installs a local copy on the PC you're scanning and sets it to scan at each reboot. However, you can also choose to just run a one-time scan without installing anything. In testing, I had no trouble installing this product on my twelve malware-infested test systems. That's refreshing, considering that getting some products installed has required hours of tech support intervention via phone and live chat.

Like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free 1.51, HitmanPro has a user interface that's focused on the singular task at hand. Most users will just launch it and immediately click Next to initiate the scan. Yes, there are a few configuration settings, but leaving them at their default values will ensure maximum security.

The time required for a scan depends strongly on the number of suspicious unknown files found, because HitmanPro uploads such files for cloud-based analysis. On my standard clean test system, a full scan took just four minutes and a repeat scan came in barely over a minute. The average for recent antivirus products is over 30 minutes, so HitmanPro is definitely fast!

Scanning the infested systems took longer, in some cases much longer. A couple of times I noticed in the scan results that the connection with the cloud had failed. I rescanned those systems to ensure the best result.

At the end of a scan, HitmanPro lists all the malware, suspicious files, and tracking cookies that it found. Its scan relies on technology from five antivirus companies: Dr. Web, IKARUS, G Data, Emsisoft, and Bitdefender. Clicking on any of the found items displays which of the antivirus engines detected it and what name each used to describe it.

Some list items will include little rectangular notes that the company calls "chevrons." For a running process, the chevron displays the process ID. HitmanPro use chevrons to flag drivers, files that launch at startup, and files protected by Windows File Protection, among other things.

Double-clicking an item in the results list brings up an extraordinarily detailed list of attributes noted by HitmanPro. The average user won't necessarily want to deal with this level of detail, but I found it fascinating.

The list also indicates HitmanPro's recommended action for each found item. I saw no need to change the defaults except in one particular case. On every test system HitmanPro identified the well-known security tool RootkitRevealer as a Trojan. It's not, so I chose the option to report this file as safe.

Genome of rare fruit fly, Drosophila mauritiana, sequenced: New method measures genetic variability of populations

Dec. 17, 2012 ? In the twentieth century the sequencing of an entire genome of a higher (eukaryotic) organism was a truly exceptional event -- by the end of the year 2000, only four such sequences were available. Since then, technological advances have put whole-genome sequencing within the reach of many more groups and new sequences have appeared at regular intervals. Viola Nolte in the group of Christian Schl?tterer at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna has just published the first whole-genome sequence of a eukaryote to be determined at this university.

The results are published in the current issue of the journal Genome Research and reveal intriguing details about the evolution of the species.

The species in question is the fruit fly Drosophila mauritiana, a close relative of the well known (and previously sequenced) Drosophila melanogaster that swarms around our fruit bowls in summer. Nolte and colleagues now present a complete genomic sequence, annotating it to indicate the various genes it contains. The information will naturally be extremely useful to all those who are working on this organism.

But the present study goes much, much further. Schl?tterer's group has recently developed powerful analytic methods for measuring the genetic variability of populations. In contrast to its widespread cousin, Drosophila mauritiana is only found on the island of Mauritius and it might be expected that the species' highly restricted distribution would lead to a relatively low rate of variability. Surprisingly, however, Nolte and her colleagues found that its genome is highly diverse, with polymorphisms (genetic variation) present across the chromosomes. Interestingly, the polymorphisms are not evenly distributed throughout the genome. Instead, the researchers observed that within the highly variable regions there are two large areas where the sequence is much more highly conserved. Such "troughs in variability" are thought to be the result of selective sweeps: newly arising mutations confer so great a selective advantage on the flies in question that they spread rapidly through the population until they become "fixed," or present in essentially all individuals.

One of the classical tenets of genetics is that when a parent carries two different versions of a gene at a particular locus, each of the so-called alleles has an equal probability of being passed to the next generation. Recently, however, it has become clear that certain genes are able to "cheat" and ensure that they are preferentially transmitted to the offspring. The simplest model involves two genes close together, of which one encodes a poison to which the other confers resistance. The poison kills all the gametes that do not contain the resistance gene, effectively ensuring the rapid spread of the allele in question through the genome. Might the two "troughs in variability" in the Drosophila mauritiana genome have arisen from an intragenomic conflict of this kind? It is hard to answer this question with certainty. However, one of the two troughs that Nolte identified contains the so-called Odysseus gene, which has previously been suggested to be involved in genomic conflict in the closely related Drosophila simulans. The other might relate to a second system characterized in Drosophila simulans.

The fact that two areas of the Drosophila mauritiana genome vary considerably less than surrounding regions suggests that some of the genes present have recently been involved in intragenomic conflicts. And these may indirectly help ensure the species' identity. As Schl?tterer explains, "the biggest challenge for a newly separated species is to avoid being subsumed back into the species from which it derived. The weapons used in intragenomic conflicts also work against hybrids with related species so we can speculate that they act as a type of 'speciation gene'. It will be intriguing to study whether this has been the case for the Mauritius fruit flies."

Abe's challenge: Can he give Japan what money can't buy

TOKYO (Reuters) - Even before Japanese voters returned Shinzo Abe's party to power, he had already won over financial markets with an economic revival plan as seductively simple as economists say it is risky: print money and spend it. Lots of it.

The Liberal Democratic Party's landslide on Sunday is likely to sustain a market rally fuelled by economic stimulus hopes, but Abe's economic legacy will probably be defined by how he tackles chronic ills that easy money alone cannot fix and that were largely ignored during the campaign.

The conservative leader set to return to the prime minister's post he abruptly left in 2007 campaigned on a promise to double spending on public works and to push the Bank of Japan for radical action to end deflation and help exporters such as Toyota and Sony by taming the yen.

"The fact that Abe points to changes in the BOJ law or forex levels, or aggressive easing as solutions to Japan's problems is, if anything, worrying," said Yuuki Sakurai, chief executive of Fukoku Capital Management which manages $19 billion in assets.

"They should be treated as tools to buy time to implement structural reforms, but we're not hearing anything about deep reforms that the LDP wants to carry out."

The so-called Abe trade - a 4 percent slide in the yen and more than a 10 percent rise in stock prices over the past month - shows that for now, most investors just want to see the new leader fulfill his pledges.

Analysts said they expected Sunday's vote, which according to TV projections based on counted votes gave LDP and its ally a two-thirds lower house majority, to sustain that trend in the near-term.

"Abe's economic policies will be implemented so the economy will improve next year. The problem is what happens after that," said Koichi Haji, chief economist at NLI Research Institute in Tokyo. "The key is whether Abe can implement long-term structural reforms and growth strategies."

The BOJ is poised to heed Abe's calls for more aggressive easing and a more ambitious 2 percent inflation target, with markets expecting the central bank to ease policy for the fifth time this year on Thursday.

Investors also expect an extra budget of up to 10 trillion yen ($120 billion) as a down payment on Abe's plan to spend such amounts per year over the next decade - double the current level - on public works long synonymous with the LDP.

Economists say pumping cash into the economy will only give it a temporary jolt if not followed by efforts to lift its growth potential and contain runaway debt.

In just three decades Japan has become the world's oldest society, with those 65 or above making up nearly a quarter of a population that is greying and is estimated to have shrunk by over 260,000 in the last fiscal year alone.

Recipes to cope with it are well known: social security overhaul, including cuts in healthcare and pensions; boosting access to overseas markets and opening Japan to foreign goods, workers and investment; power sector revamp and bringing more women into the workforce.

All, however, carry political and social risks that Japan's recent revolving-door leaders were unable or unwilling to take.

Left to sink or swim with swings in overseas demand for its exports and its currency, the world's third-largest economy has been in and out of recession and dogged by low-grade deflation for the past two decades.

Now, in firm control of the lower house, Abe has a chance to prove his mettle and erase the memories of his first troubled year in office.

So far he has played it safe.

His "Abenomics" -- a mix of potent monetary stimulus and big public spending -- carries little political cost and he has been coy on touchy issues such the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade pact, or implementing sales tax increases.

With some luck, the new government may be even be able to call an end to a brief recession it entered last quarter.

Economists polled by Reuters last week predict the economy will start growing again in the first quarter of next year, largely due to expected recovery in China, Japan's top export market.

TAX TEST

Abe's first stern economic test will come after August, when the government, armed with second-quarter data, will decide whether the economy is strong enough to go ahead with a first round of planned sales tax increases.

With 10-year bond yields near a decade low below 0.7 percent, bond investors are now confident that he can steer the central bank to buy more bonds from the world's most indebted government without setting off a market meltdown.

To keep that trust, Abe must convince investors that in his push for big scale-stimulus, he has not abandoned budget discipline. Economists say with Japan's public debt at more than twice its economic output and climbing, the new government can ill-afford delaying a tax hike that has become a symbol of Tokyo's fiscal rectitude. Their message is clear: "Just do it!"

"I hope they will go through with it," said Takatoshi Ito, a Tokyo University professor, former adviser to the first Abe administration who is now mooted as a possible successor to BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa when his term ends in April.

"Tax revenue is less than half of expenditures. Bond issuance is bigger than tax revenues. It's like using a credit card for more than half of your monthly expenditure. It's crazy, abnormal, you can't go on like that."
